Serco supports UK Government's drive to help young people into work

Serco Group plc (Serco), the international service company is today announcing the creation of 1,000 new eight-week work placement opportunities for young people and 500 apprenticeships, all provided in 2011, across the UK. This initiative is part of our commitment to helping young people develop the skills and capabilities needed to enter work and is in support of the UK Government's drive to reduce youth unemployment across the country.
Under the new work placement scheme, 1,000 eight-week work experience placements will be offered to young people across Serco's UK business. Placements will be preceded by two weeks of relevant government funded training for those who are entitled to claim Job Seekers Allowance. The scale and breadth of Serco's apprentice scheme has been growing rapidly in recent years and today's announcement expands it still further. Apprenticeships are available in areas as varied as avionics, aeronautical engineering, building services, marine engineering, horticulture, satellite communications, business administration, rail engineering, catering, leisure services and custodial care.
As part of today's announcements Christopher Hyman, Chief Executive of Serco Group, joined other business leaders, at a meeting with Prime Minister, David Cameron, and Deputy Prime Minister, Nick Clegg, to discuss the challenges faced by the UK's young people and the solutions to equipping them with the right skills for work. The UK Government is working with leading business including IBM, BT, Tesco, Marks and Spencer, Siemens and thousands of smaller companies across the country to create 100,000 of the new work experience places over the next two years.
