Environmental Services
The scope of Serco's environmental services business includes the delivery of refuse and recycling, street cleansing, vehicle maintenance, landscaping and grounds maintenance. We also continue to expand the range of services we offer within the waste management sector with the introduction of waste treatment and processing.
Serco's environmental services business has seen extraordinary growth over the last few years; we now operate 15 contracts across 16 local authorities throughout the UK, including our groundbreaking shared services contract with Mid Suffolk and Babergh District Councils which was the first of its kind awarded in 2006. Within our environmental services team, we employ over 2,400 staff.
Serco's deep understanding of the local government environment has been built up over many years and the sheer breadth of services we offer enable us to provide completely integrated solutions across the local community.
We ask and we listen; this philosophy has allowed us to focus upon the important issues and objectives within our local communities. By carrying out quarterly independent tracker surveys, we are able to monitor the quality of service delivery and deploy resources more effectively for an even better service. This approach has seen us emerge as one of the first contractors within the UK to derive its service profit from desired contract outcomes such as levels of customer satisfaction, a model first adopted in 2002 for our street cleaning and landscaping services partnership with Woking BC.
Technology is also very high on Serco's agenda and we are determined to find ways of delivering service improvements in a more cost effective manner. We use vehicle tracking systems to eliminate unnecessary journeys and implement state-of-the-art systems and tools such as using in-cab technology in our vehicles to provide valuable real time information to our onsite teams and customers helpdesk. All of these contribute to minimising the impact we have on the environment by easing traffic congestion and air pollution.
